Wiki & Abstracts (no. 8) - Women's Role in Media (part 2)

HOW IS BEAUTY DEFINED IN THE MEDIA?

beau·ty

[byoo-tee]
noun, plural -ties.

1. the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations (as shape, color, sound, etc.), a meaningful design or pattern, or something else (as a personality in which high spiritual qualities are manifest).

2. a beautiful person, especially a woman

The media plays a HUGE ROLE in how woman see themselves. Commercials manipulate you to think that their product will make you like the models you see on the screen. Magazines portray iconic images of what is beautiful at the moment. But is it real?

Watch the video below..

How does seeing these images of what "beauty" is in the media over and over again affecting women? Even worse, how is it effecting young girls?

THIS VIDEO CONTAINS IMAGES THAT CAN BE CONSIDERED DISTURBING. BUT THE TRUTH ISN'T ALWAYS PRETTY. NO PUN INTENDED.

Women's role in the media is a super controversial topic. But the fact is the media is being used as a tool by huge corporations to sell us a limited definition of beauty. And let's face it ladies, they're BANKING off our insecurities.
